Whatever it is you love about fly fishing, you’ve likely had a mentor or role model. Fly fishing is also geographic, species-specific, or tied closely to the skill sets surrounding fly tying and casting. These differences are not strictly generational. Younger fly fishers might have been inspired by the adventures of Oliver White or through George Daniel’s technical instruction, yet are unfamiliar with Vince Marinaro. We’ve all been influenced by different sets of people. It’s important to recognize the people who are so intimately tied to the success we’ve had in advancing this sport over the past 50 years, but we freely admit no one will completely agree with this list.
